Service: Well Rehabilitation & Preventative Maintenance
At a Glance
As one of the premier golf clubs in New England, Boston Golf Club’s water consistency is critical for maintaining elite course conditions. With naturally occurring iron bacteria issues and aging infrastructure, Superintendent Rodney Hine partners with Maher Services for a strict two-year rehabilitation cycle. The recent results were dramatic: Specific capacity in one well increased from 4.9 GPM/ft to 30.3 GPM/ft, securing the water flow needed for the season without damaging the manicured grounds.
The Challenge: Iron Bacteria and “Manicured” Access
Managing a premier golf course requires proactively mitigating biological threats to water flow. Boston Golf Club faces a specific challenge with the local aquifer: a high prevalence of iron bacteria.
- The Cost of Waiting: The bacteria must be removed regularly to keep the wells functioning at their best. Rodney noted that, if he missed a maintenance cycle, he “could see the difference in the performance of the well”.
- Site Sensitivity: Accessing wells on a golf course often means driving heavy equipment on or around expensive grounds. Rodney needs a partner who understands the property layout to avoid costly turf damage.
The Solution: Data-Driven Rehabilitation
We executed a scheduled rehabilitation for all four of the property’s wells on a two-year preventative maintenance cycle. The project focused on mechanical and chemical redevelopment to break down the bacterial fouling and restore hydraulic efficiency.
The Technical Fix: When our crew arrived, some wells’ performance had significantly degraded.
- Before Rehab: One well showed a specific capacity of 4.9 GPM/ft while pumping at 73 GPM.
- After Rehab: Following our treatment and surging process, we re-rated the well. The specific capacity jumped to 30.3 GPM/ft while pumping at 115 GPM.
A “Succession of Experience” Beyond the technical results, the operational execution was seamless. Because our crew was familiar with the property, Rodney noted they didn’t have to “reinvent” the access plan.
“Nobody there [needed to be educated on] exactly how to get in and out to our wells… We didn’t have to reinvent it,” Rodney explained. “I was not worried one bit because I knew that it was a succession of experience that was passed down.”
During the process, the crew also identified an issue with one of the wells’ motors. They immediately alerted Rodney, allowing him to replace the failing component proactively rather than facing an emergency later.
The Results
By adhering to a proactive maintenance schedule, Boston Golf Club achieved results that Rodney described as “better than expected”.
- Restored Flow: The significant increase in specific capacity ensures the irrigation system can handle peak demand.
- Communication: Rodney appreciated that the crew kept him posted throughout the job. “As they discovered things, they’re letting me know… Nothing is unexpected,” he said.
- Future-Proofing: Trusting our expertise, Rodney is now consulting with us to replace two wells that have been slowly losing capacity over time.
